It gives us great pleasure to invite you to enter the inaugural 2020/21 School Sport Magazine National Schools U14 Rugby Union Cup. Entry form below.

Our first annual U14 knockout competition will kick off in September 2020 with the final set for March 2021 and will complement the excellent schools’ tournaments run by the sports’ national governing body. It also follows our exciting U13 national competition which ran from 2013-2017.

The competition, with an entry fee of £32, is open to all state and independent schools in England and Wales and will run on a local, county and regional knockout basis in the early rounds to avoid excess travel.

The U14 competition is aimed mainly for players in year 9 in the year of the competition but is also open to players in year 8 under RFU guidelines and will be played mainly in midweek but weekends if preferred.

Rules and Regulations

The competition shall forthwith be known as the School Sport Magazine National Schools U14 Rugby Union Cup.

The Laws of Rugby Union will apply except where specified below.

The main competition will run from September to March with the final in March.

The competition is open to bona-fide full-time students of the school. The competition is for boys in year 9 in the year of the competition under RFU guidelines. Players must be 13 and under on August 31 preceding the commencement of the cup

The breaking of any regulation, inadvertently or deliberately, will result in disqualification from the competition at the discretion of the organising committee.

The closing date for entries will be May 31 (subject to change) in the year preceding the competition after which a draw, with closing dates for all rounds, and contact details will be sent to all competing schools.

An entry fee to cover administrative costs must be received before June 30. Failure to do so will mean your place being offered to a school on a reserve list.

The first-named team will be the home team and will be responsible for organising individual rounds in conjunction and agreement with the away team. But the away team should be equally as proactive in organising games to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

Matches will be midweek, unless both teams agree otherwise, and should be arranged as far in advance of the final date for organising the round to allow for postponements due to weather etc. Extensions will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the organising committee.

Where the home team is unable to provide a suitable venue for the match, the fixture must be reversed and played at the away team venue to ensure the match is completed by the due date. An alternative venue may be used if both sides agree. Where a fixture is reversed or changed the home team will remain as published in the draw.

All RFU U14 rules and regulations to be followed including: Teams will be 15 a side. The ball shall be size 4. Maximum pitch size 100m x 70m. Matches shall consist of two halves of 25 minutes each way.

In the knock-out stages (other than the final), in the event that the scores are level at the end of a match, the winner of the match will be the team that has scored most tries. If this does not produce a winner, the team that has scored the most conversions from tries will proceed to the next round. If this still does not produce a winner or the score is 0-0, the away team shall proceed to the next round.

In the final, if scores are level at the end of the match, the following order of events shall be applied in order to determine the winner of a drawn match: number of tries, number of conversions from tries, first try, first points. If this does not produce a winner or the score is 0-0, the title will be shared.

The winning team will be responsible for notifying the result of the match as soon after completion by emailing [email protected] with details of any significant performances/events (Try scorers/comebacks/other stories etc). Both christian and surname should be included. Team or action pictures are also welcome.

Reports and results will be included in School Sport Magazine and on the School Sport Magazine website www.schoolsportmag.co.uk on a regular basis.
